The Butter and Egg Man is a 1925 satirical comedy by George S. Kaufman, his only solo-written play, about a naive country boy, Peter Jones, who comes to Broadway to invest in a play, gets conned by shady producers, but ultimately turns a flop into a hit through his own shrewdness, becoming a "butter-and-egg man"—a slang term for a wealthy, unwary big-city spender. The play, a major Broadway success, skewers the absurdities of the theater world with sharp wit, celebrating the triumph of small-town innocence over big-city cynicism.
